Science continues to prove what we've sensed all along: the mind and the body are interrelated parts of a whole. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions impact the functioning of the body, and vice versa. If health is best described as a state of dynamic equilibrium or balance, then mind/body wellness is the practice of paying attention to and balancing the needs of our mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical selves.
When we are out of balance, the body may relay this information through tension, pain, injury, or illness. Similarly, the mind tries to get our attention with negative thoughts or emotions that leave us feeling stressed, angry, fearful, hopeless, or sad. The good news is we can learn how to intervene in the stress response to regain our sense of emotional balance and our ability to heal.
